Graduate Earleen Surujballi

Earleen Surujballi knows first-hand how difficult it is to break into the television industry. With some timely help from Entertainment Connection's program -- and a lot of hard work -- she ended up just where she wanted. But it wasn't easy.
"Last year I finished my Bachelor's degree in Media Studies," Earleen explains, "but didn't feel that was enough to give me the push I needed to get into the business. So I started doing some research online."
She ran into Entertainment Connection on the Web, and continued running into it. "Everywhere I searched, Entertainment Connection's Radio and Television programs kept coming up. And I found nothing but good things written about them. Besides, the idea appealed to me: the job assistance and placement, and the fact that you get a one one-on-one mentor to take you through everything, hands on.
"Luckily, I decided to give it a try. I figured it was making an investment in myself, and my education. The only problem was whether to go with Radio or TV -- both of which had always interested me."
So she spoke to Entertainment Connection president Jimi Petulla, and got some good advice. "Jimi felt that I was a better fit for radio," she recalls. "He also told me that radio would be easier to enter, and would serve as a stepping stone into television. In fact, that's exactly what happened!"
Petulla introduced Earleen to her mentor, Sam Greenfield, who had a show on WEVD 1050 AM radio, a CBS owned station in New York City. "Sam was (and still is!) a great mentor and a valuable contact for me," Earleen enthuses. "And Sam echoed what Jimi had said about the link between radio and TV."
During the period when she was going through the Entertainment Connection program, Earleen was working full-time for the Darcy Advertising agency as an administrative assistant to the Executive Creative Director. When her boss saw her commitment to the radio program, he offered to help. "He put me in touch with friends of his who were producers, and allowed me to do some voice-overs on some of the agency's rough cuts."
Meanwhile, Earleen finished her studies with Sam. Her final project was a professional demo that she could use to look for work in the industry. "Sam really gave me the
confidence to 'put myself out there,' " she says. "You never know what's going to come through, so you have to try every avenue."
One of the "avenues" she tried was an online application to Lifetime Television. "I sent in my demo in MP3 format, along with a resume. What a pleasant surprise it was when they contacted me!"
Earleen now works at Lifetime for Tom Hanft, the Senior Vice President of Advertising and Promotions, New Media and Marketing. "Tom is extending a lot of opportunities to me, and is eager to help me and encourage me in whatever it is that I want to delve into. I already got to read a script for one of the Lifetime original movies. And it looks like I'll be involved in the production!"
"I'm not normally a 'morning person,' but for some reason I wake up in the morning and I really want to go to work!" Earleen says. "I haven't felt like that in a long, long time. I have a purpose every day. I'm excited!"
